Jungle Chess, traditionally known as Dou Shou Qi (斗兽棋) or Animal Chess, is a historic two-player strategy board game originating from China. Each commander leads an army of eight animals of ascending ranks—from the tiny Rat up to the mighty Elephant.
Unlike Western chess, the Jungle Chess battlefield features unique terrain: two water rivers dividing the board, six deadly trap squares, and two opponent dens. With the iconic twist where the humble Rat can defeat the supreme Elephant, every match is an electrifying dance of predatory tactics and trap-setting.
Higher-ranked animals can capture lower-ranked foes. Memorize the hierarchy to dominate the jungle food chain.
The strongest predator on the board. Can capture all animals except the agile Rat.
High strength beast that can leap across rivers horizontally or vertically to ambush prey.
Lethal predator capable of jumping across rivers unless an enemy rat blocks the water path.
Mid-tier powerhouse ideal for controlling riverbanks and supporting attack flanks.
Balanced guardian useful for harassing advancing enemies and fortifying your den perimeter.
Agile scout excellent for screening enemy approaches and cooperating in trap defenses.
Light defender suitable for maneuvering through choke points and guarding home traps.
The only beast able to swim in the river, block leaps, and conquer the massive Elephant!
Special rule: The Rat (Rank 1) can defeat the mighty Elephant (Rank 8) on land. Animals caught inside an enemy trap lose their power and can be captured by any piece.
Everything you need to know about movement, capturing, water obstacles, and victory conditions.
You win by moving any of your animal pieces into the enemy's Den, or by eliminating all enemy pieces so they have no legal moves remaining.
Pieces move one square orthogonally (forward, backward, left, or right) per turn. Diagonal moves are strictly prohibited.
A piece can capture an enemy piece of equal or lower rank occupying the destination square. The Rat can capture the Elephant as a special rule.
Most animals cannot enter water squares. Only the Rat can swim inside rivers. The Lion and Tiger can leap completely across a river section.
A player cannot enter their own Den. If an enemy piece steps into one of your three trap squares, its rank is reduced to 0 while trapped.
A Rat in the river cannot attack an Elephant on land. A Rat in the water also blocks the river leap path of an enemy Lion or Tiger.
Play by traditional tournament Dou Shou Qi rules. All mechanics are fully automated and verified in Jungle Chess 3D.
The battlefield is laid out in a 7-column by 9-row grid. In the center flow two rivers (each 2×3 squares). Three traps guard each player's Den at the north and south edges.
Understanding animal strength is only step one. Positional sacrifice and river control win the game.
